Football and Cricket on the Ward Memorial Playing Field

APPLESHAW CRICKET CLUB

Our season got off to a wonderful start, if not a little cold! The first game was against the Chairman's XI in an evening 20:20. The village put the visitors into bat and after a fearsome opening bowling spell by the Hon Ground secretary and some great fielding and catching the opposition reached a competitive target of 136 for 8. The village were then unfortunately bowled out for 78, not before Dave Fitzpatrick carted the Chairman around the ground much to enjoyment of an excellent turn out of support from the sidelines. Everyone enjoyed the brilliant BBQ manfully served up by Mike Clayton and the Bar managed by Caroline Hughes and our thanks go to them and all the supporters in raising £300 for the club. Alongside this, the very kind donation from the monies raised by The Walnut Tree we are able to keep the very old machinery we have, going. Any other donations will be very gratefully received!

The second game against Dummer CC was cancelled due to rain and we hope to reschedule that for later in the season. The next game was a 40:40 match against Overton CC. They won the toss and decided to bat. After a tight opening spell from Fin Hughes and Dave Fitzpatrick, Matt Wilcox and Graham Anderson made some good in-roads to their batting line up and Matt finished his spell with an excellent 4 wicket haul. Again the fielding was tidy and the bowling contributions from all the other team members shows real promise for the rest of the season. Overton were bowled out for 124 off 34 overs. Nigel McGrane and Marcus T-Ford opened the batting but after some lusty blows Marcus returned to the showers. Fin Hughes came in at No 3 and went on to score an unbeaten 83. Alongside some well timed shots from match manager Pete Young Appleshaw romped home with 7 wickets and 15 overs in hand. Again we had some great support from the village and our thanks go to the ladies who assisted with the teas and the bar.

I hope everyone is enjoying seeing cricket in the village again and if you want to play please do get in touch otherwise we hope you will come and support us.
